China

Dynasties, Dumplings & Dazzling Discoveries

Where the Past Meets the Future in Unforgettable Ways

Few places offer such a thrilling mix of history, modernity, and diversity as China. Home to one of the world’s oldest civilisations, China’s story is told in palaces, pagodas, gardens, and ancient cities - but it's also being written right now in neon-lit skyscrapers, high-speed trains, and cutting-edge cuisine.

Wander through the Forbidden City, cruise down the Li River between misty karst peaks, or snack on dumplings in the backstreets of Xi’an. Whether you're drawn to majestic nature, world-class food, dazzling cities or sacred mountains, China offers experiences that are bold, breathtaking, and deeply enriching.

Visa Requirements

UK passport holders must apply for a tourist visa (L visa) before entering China. You’ll need a passport valid for at least 6 months, a recent passport photo, confirmed travel bookings, and possibly proof of accommodation. Applications are submitted through the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC). Allow 1–2 weeks for processing.

Key Airports

  • Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) – Best for exploring the capital and northern China, including the Great Wall.

  • Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) – Gateway to modern China, ideal for city breaks and access to the Yangtze Delta.

  • Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) – Great for southern China, trade hubs, and connections to Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

Spoken Languages

Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua) is the official language, but dozens of regional dialects exist. English is spoken in major cities and tourist hotspots, but less so in rural areas. A few key phrases (or a translation app!) can make all the difference.

Try these basics in Mandarin:

  • Nǐ hǎo! – Hello
  • Xièxiè – Thank you
  • Qǐng wèn… – Excuse me / May I ask...
  • Duōshǎo qián? – How much is it?
  • Wǒ bú huì shuō Zhōngwén – I don't speak Chinese

Top tip: Keep your hotel’s name and address written in Chinese for taxi drivers.

Holidays to China

During the Summer

Summers (June to August) are hot and humid, especially in the south. Temperatures can range from 25°C in the north to over 35°C in southern cities like Guangzhou. It's also monsoon season in many regions, great for lush landscapes but expect some rain.

During the Winter

Winter (December to February) brings dry, chilly weather in the north (Beijing can drop below freezing) and mild, misty days in the south (Shanghai averages around 10°C). It’s a great time to see snow-covered temples and enjoy steaming bowls of hotpot.

Top China Hot Spots

In China, there’s always more to explore. Walk the Great Wall as it winds through rugged hills, visit the Terracotta Warriors and stare into 2,000 years of history, or watch sunrise over the surreal peaks of Zhangjiajie - the inspiration for Avatar. From ancient wonders to tech-powered cities, it’s a thrilling contrast that never stops impressing.

Beijing – Imperial Grandeur & Living History

Home to the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and nearby Great Wall access, Beijing is a masterclass in Chinese history with a modern twist.

Shanghai – Skyline City with Soul

Where old-world charm meets future-forward innovation. Stroll the Bund, ride the world’s fastest train, and explore ultra-modern art, fashion, and food scenes.

Xi’an – Gateway to the Ancient World

Famous for the Terracotta Army and the start of the Silk Road, Xi’an also offers a walled old town, bustling markets, and some of China’s best street food.

Guilin & Yangshuo – Natural Wonderland

Otherworldly karst mountains, tranquil river cruises, and postcard-perfect landscapes. Ideal for hiking, cycling, or just floating through scenic serenity.

Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Holiday

  1. Download a VPN Before You Go - Many Western websites (Google, WhatsApp, Facebook) are restricted in China. Install a VPN app before you arrive to stay connected to your favourite sites and services.
  2. Use Local Apps Like a Pro - Apps like WeChat (for messaging and payments) and Dianping (like Yelp for food and attractions) are key to travelling like a local. Get familiar with translation and map apps too!
  3. Don’t Skip the Local Trains - China’s high-speed trains are fast, comfortable, and a brilliant way to see the country. Try a first-class ticket for extra comfort - you’ll zoom across the countryside at over 300 km/h.
  4. Get Adventurous with Street Food - From dumplings and noodles to grilled skewers and fluffy bao, the flavours of China are legendary. Head to local night markets for the real deal, safe, tasty, and unforgettable.
