Vietnam
Banh Mi, Bays & Breathtaking Beauty
Where Culture Runs Deep and Every Meal Tells a Story
Vietnam is a place that moves you, literally and emotionally. Motorbikes buzz down the streets of Hanoi like a symphony of organised chaos, while lanterns glow quietly along the riverbanks of Hoi An. Towering limestone islands float in Halong Bay, farmers tend to emerald-green terraces in Sapa, and in every corner, the scent of herbs, grilled meats and strong coffee fills the air.
This is a country of contrasts and charm - where French colonial flair mixes with ancient temples, where every region has its own flavour, and where the people greet you with genuine warmth and proud hospitality. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls in Da Lat or street food in Saigon, Vietnam is equal parts energy and enchantment.
Visa Requirements
UK passport holders can visit Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days. If you plan to stay longer, you can apply for an e-Visa online, which allows a stay of up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.
Key Airports
- Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi (HAN) – Best for exploring the north: Halong Bay, Sapa, and the capital.
- Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) – Gateway to the south and Vietnam’s most dynamic urban centre.
- Da Nang International Airport (DAD) – Ideal for central Vietnam, including Hoi An, Hue, and beach breaks.
Spoken Languages
Vietnamese is the official language. English is spoken in tourist areas and by younger generations, but a few local words go a long way.
Try these:
- Xin chào – Hello
- Cảm ơn – Thank you
- Bao nhiêu tiền? – How much is it?
- Ngon quá! – So delicious!
- Không sao – No problem
Pronunciation can be tricky, but effort is always appreciated, and often rewarded with a smile.
Holidays to Vietnam
During the Summer
Summer (May to August) is hot and humid across the country, especially in the north and south. Expect 30–36°C with bursts of rain. It’s a great time for beach trips to Da Nang, Nha Trang or Phu Quoc.
During the Winter
Winter varies by region. Northern areas like Hanoi and Sapa can be cool and misty (10–20°C), while central and southern Vietnam stay pleasantly warm (25–30°C). It’s a great season for hiking, cultural tours, and comfortable exploration.
Top Vietnamese Hot Spots
Cruise through the otherworldly islets of Halong Bay, sample your way through Hanoi’s chaotic-but-charming Old Quarter, or motorbike the legendary Hai Van Pass for coastal views that take your breath away. Vietnam offers unforgettable moments in every direction - whether you’re after history, nature, food or adventure.
Hanoi – Old-School Cool
Vietnam’s capital blends ancient temples, French colonial architecture and buzzing street life. Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, slurp on pho, and soak up centuries of culture in every alley.
Hoi An – The Lantern-Lit Gem
This riverside town is pure magic. Wander through lantern-lit streets, explore tailor shops, and try cooking classes or bike rides through the surrounding rice paddies.
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) – Fast, Fierce & Fascinating
A bold, modern metropolis buzzing with energy. Visit the War Remnants Museum, sip rooftop cocktails, and dive into the sizzling street food scene.
Sapa – Terraces, Trails & Tribal Traditions
Located in the misty northern mountains, Sapa offers incredible trekking through rice terraces and visits to ethnic minority villages for an insight into authentic rural life.
Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Holiday
- Master the Art of Crossing the Street - Traffic looks wild, but trust the flow! Walk slowly, steadily, and confidently—motorbikes will weave around you like magic. Don't run, don’t stop, just walk.
- Take the Overnight Train for Adventure- The Reunification Express between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is scenic, affordable and fun. Book a soft sleeper and watch the countryside roll by.
- Eat Everything (Yes, Really) - Vietnamese cuisine is diverse and region-specific. Try bun cha in Hanoi, cao lầu in Hoi An, and bánh xèo in the south. The best food is often served on plastic stools on the side of the road.
- Stay Hydrated, but Skip the Tap Water - Always drink bottled or filtered water, and use it to brush your teeth. Pro tip: many hotels and cafés offer free water refills, bring a reusable bottle!
