Madagascar

Lemurs, Baobabs & Untouched Island Magic

Where Nature Runs Wild and Wonders Grow on Trees

Welcome to Madagascar, an island so unique it’s often called the “eighth continent.” Isolated from Africa for over 80 million years, it’s home to an astonishing variety of wildlife and landscapes - from spiny deserts and rainforests to emerald rice fields and white-sand beaches. Here, chameleons change colours, lemurs leap through ancient trees, and towering baobabs line golden paths like something from a dream.

But Madagascar isn’t only about nature. It's also a vibrant fusion of African, Asian, and French cultures, reflected in its language, cuisine, and warm, welcoming people. Whether you're trekking through national parks, relaxing on remote beaches, or sailing on a traditional dhow, Madagascar will surprise and enchant you every step of the way.

Visa Requirements

UK passport holders require a visa, which can be obtained on arrival or online before travel. A 30-day tourist visa typically costs around €35–40 and your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Key Airports

  • Ivato International Airport, Antananarivo (TNR) – Main gateway to the capital and central Madagascar.

  • Fascene Airport, Nosy Be (NOS) – Ideal for beach holidays and island escapes.

  • Tôlanaro Airport (FTU) – Serves the remote southern coast, including Fort Dauphin and surrounding wilderness.

Spoken Languages

The official languages are Malagasy and French. English is spoken in some tourist areas but isn’t widely used - learning a few local phrases goes a long way.

Try these:

  • Salama! – Hello
  • Misaotra – Thank you
  • Azafady – Please / Excuse me
  • Tsara be! – Very good!
  • Oviana ny fiara manaraka? – When is the next bus? (for the adventurous!)

A warm smile and respectful approach will take you far in Madagascar.

Holidays to Madagascar

During the Summer

From November to March, it’s warm and humid, especially along the coasts, with temperatures between 25–33°C. It’s also the rainy season, so expect occasional heavy showers and lush, green scenery.

During the Winter

From May to October, the dry season brings cooler, pleasant weather (especially in the highlands), with temperatures ranging from 18–27°C. This is the best time to explore national parks and enjoy the beaches.

Top Madagascar Hot Spots

Walk among the towering giants of the Avenue of the Baobabs, where sunset lights up the surreal tree-lined path. Go lemur-spotting in Andasibe National Park, where Madagascar’s most famous residents sing and swing through the trees. Then hop to Nosy Be or Île Sainte-Marie for tropical beaches, coral reefs, and whale watching in season.

Avenue of the Baobabs – Nature’s Cathedral

A surreal and spectacular grove of ancient baobab trees near Morondava. Best visited at sunset when the trees cast long shadows and the magic feels almost mythical.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park – Lemur Central

Just a few hours from the capital, this lush rainforest is home to the indri (the largest lemur), colourful chameleons, and haunting forest sounds that feel straight out of a movie.

Nosy Be – Island Bliss in the Indian Ocean

Madagascar’s most popular island escape, perfect for snorkelling, diving, and relaxing under coconut palms. Don’t miss the ylang-ylang plantations and sunset at Mont Passot.

Isalo National Park – The Grand Canyon of Madagascar

With its dramatic canyons, rock formations, and hidden oasis pools, Isalo is a hiker’s paradise, and one of the country’s most breathtaking natural parks.

Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Holiday

  1. Embrace “Mora Mora” – The Malagasy Way of Life - “Mora mora” means “slowly, slowly.” Life moves at its own pace here, especially outside cities. Be patient, be present, and let the rhythm of the island guide you.
  2. Travel by 4x4 for Real Adventure - Many roads are rough and remote - but that’s part of the charm. A 4x4 vehicle opens up access to the most spectacular hidden places in Madagascar.
  3. Bring Cash and Small Notes - ATMs are rare outside major cities. Carry enough cash for rural areas, markets, and tips - small denominations are especially helpful.
  4. Try the Zebu Steak & Vanilla Everything - Zebu (a type of local cattle) makes for tender, tasty dishes. And Madagascar produces some of the world’s best vanilla - taste it in desserts, drinks, and even local rum!
