Small in size but huge in heart, Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s most captivating hidden gems. Whether you’re tracking wild elephants in lush jungles, hopping on scenic trains through emerald tea plantations, or meditating at ancient Buddhist temples, this island offers a perfect blend of nature, culture and calm.
You’ll fall in love with the pace of life here, unhurried, soulful, and deeply connected to the land. One day you’re watching the sunrise over Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the next you're learning to surf in a laid-back coastal town or sipping fresh Ceylon tea with a view. With friendly locals, incredible wildlife, vibrant cuisine and serene spirituality woven into every corner, Sri Lanka is as heartwarming as it is unforgettable.
Visa Requirements
UK travellers need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering Sri Lanka. It’s quick and easy to apply online and typically grants a 30-day stay. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Print a copy of your ETA confirmation before travelling - just in case!

Holidays to Sri Lanka
During the Summer
Thanks to its tropical climate, Sri Lanka is warm year-round, averaging 27–32°C. The west and south coasts enjoy drier weather from December to March, while the east coast is best from May to September. Always check the monsoon patterns based on your region.
During the Winter
Winter (December to February) is the perfect time to visit most of the island, especially the southern beaches, hill country, and cultural sites. You’ll get sunshine, cooler evenings in the mountains, and ideal safari conditions.
Top Sri Lankan Hot Spots
Sri Lanka invites you to slow down and dive deep. Take a scenic train from Kandy to Ella, often called one of the world’s most beautiful rail journeys. Climb the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya for epic views, or visit Yala National Park to spot leopards, elephants, and sloth bears in the wild. And when you're ready to unwind, the beaches of Mirissa or Arugam Bay offer barefoot bliss and picture-perfect sunsets.

Ella – Misty Hills and Tea Trails
A lush, laid-back mountain town surrounded by tea plantations and waterfalls. Perfect for scenic hikes, chilled cafés and unforgettable views from Ella Rock or Nine Arches Bridge.
Sigiriya – The Lion Rock Fortress
One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights. This ancient rock citadel rises dramatically from the jungle, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into a 5th-century kingdom.
Galle – Colonial Charm by the Sea
A coastal town full of Dutch colonial architecture, chic boutiques and cobbled streets. Galle Fort is perfect for slow strolls, ocean views and fresh seafood feasts.
Kandy – Cultural Heart and Spiritual Calm
Nestled in the hills, Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth, traditional dance performances, and peaceful lakeside walks. A must for history lovers and culture seekers.
Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Holiday
- Ride the Train – But Book Early - Sri Lanka’s trains are iconic, especially the Kandy-to-Ella route. First-class and second-class tickets sell out quickly - book in advance or embrace the backpacker spirit and go unreserved for the adventure.
- Try a Local ‘Rice & Curry’ Lunch - Skip the international menus and dive into a traditional rice and curry feast, served with 4–5 sides, bursting with flavour and spice. Locals eat with their hands (right hand only) - join in if you’re feeling brave!
- Stay in a Homestay - For a truly authentic experience, book at least one night in a local homestay. You’ll get warm hospitality, incredible home-cooked meals, and genuine insight into Sri Lankan life.
- Bring an Extra Bag for Shopping- From handwoven sarongs and spices to carved masks and stunning jewellery, Sri Lanka is a souvenir haven. And the prices? Even better. Leave space in your suitcase - you’ll need it.
